If you suffer from chronic sinusitis there are a some natural sinus remedies you can try as well as things you can do to improve your environment to help your condition.

Your Home Environment

Humidity

The humidity in your home needs to be comfortable with neither too high humidity or too low. Molds and dust mites, which can cause sinus problems, thrive in humid conditions. A too dry environment can be irritating to the nasal passages. A vaporiser can be of use if it is placed close to you. make sure you clean it regularly to prevent bacterial growth which will only make your sinus problems worse.

Ventilation

For sinus sufferers a room should be well ventilated. We are all encouraged to save energy and help the environment by draft proofing our homes but this may make your sinus problem worse. As long as it is not a day when the pollen count is high open the windows and enjoy the fresh air. Your sinuses will appreciate it!

Avoid Irritants and Allergens

Household substances that can irritate the sinuses include cigarette smoke and any products that are sprayed into the air including cleaning products, hair spray, insecticides etc. You may also be allergic to your pets so it may be wise to keep them out of the bedroom and limit the time you spend with them.

Your Lifestyle

Drink Fluids

Of course, we are all encouraged to drink lots of water but if you suffer from sinusitis it is really essential to keep them functioning as they should. Preferably drink plain water. Two pints a day should be the minimum.

Use Salt Water to irrigate Your Nose

A bulb syringe or neti pot can be used to gently wash out the nasal passages and frontal sinuses with a warm solution of non-iodised salt water. One teaspoon to a pint of water should be used. At the correct concentration and temperature you should not experience any stinging or other adverse effects.

Natural Sinus Remedies

Steam inhalation has a long tradition of use for chronic sinusitis. It gives temporary but effective relief from the pain associated with congested sinuses. Eucalyptus has been used for many years in this way and is also useful for the treatment of the symptoms of colds and flu. Eucalyptus essential oil is used in the recipe below. All essential oils should be used with care. Never use in excessive amounts, ingest or use directly on the skin. When using steam inhalation make sure there are no children in the room as the water used is very hot. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition check with your doctor before using this method.

The Recipe

Boil some water and pour about eight cups in a large bowl. Drop 3-4 drop of eucalyptus essential oil into the water. Cover your head and the bowl with a large towel and place the face above the water. Do not go too close to the water, about an arms length is close enough.
